Skin Infection Information for Patients

Many different bacteria, injuries and even allergies can cause skin infections. Some infections can develop after a cut, a scrape or surgery. Infections such as dermatitis can be caused by an allergic reaction.

Doctors can often diagnose a type of skin infection simply by looking at it. However, they may need to run tests to figure out what type of bacteria are causing the infection and what the best medicine is to treat it. Some of these tests include cell cultures, biopsies and antibacterial sensitivity tests.
