About Skin Infections

Bacterial Infections

Skin infections are caused by a variety of injuries, allergens, and bacteria and can range from minor to life threatening. Outside of a healthcare setting, the microbes most frequently causing bacterial skin infections are Staphylococcus aureus and group A streptococci, such as Streptococcus pyogenes. Nosocomially, S aureus, Enterococcus spp, coagulase-negative streptococci, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are more frequently implicated in bacterial skin infections.

Although uncomplicated skin infections are often diagnosed by thorough examination alone, cell cultures, biopsies, scrapings, and culture and antibacterial sensitivity testing may also be done to assist in diagnosis and treatment.
